Veteran free-agent signings not safe as Patriots roster cuts near

FOXBORO — Next week, Bill Belichick will have to consider more than just talent when assessing the Patriots’ final few roster cuts.

Because of injuries to some high-priced offseason acquisitions and surprising surges by several youngsters who were once believed to be long shots to make the 53-man roster, the Pats are facing some trickier-than-expected decisions.

Belichick often preaches to his players that the means to their arrival has nothing to do with their ability to retain employment. That message will be tested Aug. 30 when the Pats trim to 75 players, and Sept. 3 when they carve out their initial 53-man team.
