FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- New England Patriots offensive linemen Tre' Jackson (knee) and Sebastian Vollmer (hip) won't play for the team in 2016 after opening the regular season on the physically unable to perform list, coach Bill Belichick confirmed Friday.
The deadline for PUP players to begin practicing was Tuesday, and both Jackson and Vollmer were never activated.
Jackson's status comes as a mild surprise as he had been making solid progress and had, for a period of time, been joining teammates as part of conditioning drills before practice. Meanwhile, Vollmer was considered a long shot and has likely played his last game for the team as his contract expires after the season.
