1. Van Pelt’s mark: Bill Belichick was never afraid to zig when everyone else would zag during his NFL coaching career. His successors in New England — Eliot Wolf and Jerod Mayo — may have taken notice.
As the league has trended towards younger offensive minds in recent years, the Patriots’ offensive coordinator search this offseason went down a different route, as they hired 54-year old Alex Van Pelt, who comes to New England with nearly 30 years of NFL experience.
