For anyone hoping for the Patriots to receive a little bit of salary cap relief after dealing retired tight end Rob Gronkowski to the Buccaneers, it doesn’t appear that’s going to be the case.
According to long-time Patriots salary cap expert Miguel Benzan, Gronkowski wasn’t counting against the club’s 2020 cap, which means Tuesday’s trade didn’t help them create any additional cap space. Benzan also points out that the good news is, there also isn’t any dead money either.
With the Patriots currently sitting with just over $1.1 million in cap space, the team still faces the challenge of freeing up enough room financially to eventually get all of their upcoming draft picks under contract.
