(Gray News) - The New England Patriots are hiring Jerod Mayo as the team’s new head coach, according to media reports.
He would replace Bill Belichick, who announced he was leaving the team after 24 seasons.
A linebackers coach under Belichick, he would be an in-house hire, described as one of Belichick’s “most trusted assistants” by The Athletic.
Mayo won a Super Bowl ring playing under Belichick and has interviewed for multiple head coaching vacancies since becoming a New England assistant in 2019, the Associated Press reported. He turned down a few interviews last offseason before signing a contract extension to remain with the Patriots.
