The NFL has pulled its financial support of a Boston University study on football-related head trauma because the project's lead researcher has been critical of the league in the past, according to an ESPN report today.
BU announced today that the National Institutes of Health would be paying for the project but made no mention of the NFL. Funds from the league's $30 million research grant to the NIH in 2012 were to be used in the seven-year, $16 million project. At the time, the NFL had said it had no say as to how its funds were to be used.
