Bill Belichick is trimming his roster ahead of New England’s upcoming week out west.
The Patriots waived defensive backs Jalen Elliott and Devin Hafford, according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss. The roster needs to be trimmed from 85 to 80 by Tuesday, so it makes sense that Belichick is doing some bookkeeping before his team heads to Las Vegas. The Patriots are practicing with the Raiders on Tuesday and Wednesday, then playing at Allegiant Stadium on Friday night.
Both Elliott and Hafford were August additions that were considered long shots to make the 53-man roster. Elliott spent the past two seasons in Detroit, while Hafford was an undrafted free agent out of Tarleton State who originally signed in May but was released after a week before being re-signed.
