Patriots Notebook: Roger Goodell denies union; will hear appeal

Roger Goodell has refused to recuse.

The NFL commissioner informed the Players Association yesterday he has rejected its request to remove himself from Tom Brady’s appeal hearing with a 1,200-word letter that shot down three key contentions. Goodell informed the NFLPA he will not rewrite the collective bargaining agreement to abrogate his authority, as this has been the agreed-upon process through three commissioners.

The appeal will be heard on June 23, and Goodell said his “mind is open” to hear Brady’s side of the story as the Patriots quarterback pleas to reduce his four-game suspension.
