FOXBORO — The Reggie Wayne experiment fizzled quickly, and it was certainly costly.
Wayne asked for his release yesterday, according to a source. The Patriots gave the veteran wide receiver a $450,000 signing bonus Aug. 24, and it’s unclear if he plans to pay it back or if the Pats have even asked. A source said that topic “never came up.”
Wayne admitted multiple times in the past two weeks the playbook was tough to grasp, and the Patriots threw a lot at him right off the bat. However, he said Thursday night after the preseason finale it was starting to slow down and he felt more comfortable in the system.
