FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The New England Patriots are strongly considering adding another wide receiver to their roster to fill the void created by Danny Amendola's ankle injury, and had three pass-catchers in town for workouts within the past 24 hours -- Jared Abbrederis, Griff Whalen and Kevin Smith.
Of the group, Whalen has the most added value as a punt returner, which gives him the best odds to stick with the club.
Furthermore, Whalen played this season with the Chargers (he was released Nov. 22), whose offensive system under head coach Mike McCoy has some cross-over to what the Patriots do under coordinator Josh McDaniels.
