Patriots defense hits rock bottom on final drive against Colts

The stage was set for a New England Patriots upset win over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 13. Even though the team’s offense had a hard time finishing drives in the red zone, the team of first-year head coach Jerod Mayo still managed to build a 24-17 lead inside six minutes to go in the game.

The Patriots were in control on offense, and the same appeared to be the case on the defensive side of the ball as well. Over the first 54 minutes of game time, after all, the unit led by coordinator DeMarcus Covington — another rookie at his position — had surrendered two touchdowns but given up only 206 total yards while intercepting Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson twice.
