DENVER — Special teams matter, and the Patriots continue to validate the importance of the so-called third phase of the game.
The Patriots jumped out to a quick lead last night thanks to a number of key plays on special teams, most notably Dion Lewis’ 103-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. This, of course, happened a game after the Pats recorded a blocked field goal and a safety in punt coverage, and that had just been their latest strong showing in the kicking game.
Offensively, Tom Brady’s group opened with a three-and-out against a well-energized Broncos defense.
