In between Drew Brees’ initial controversial comments about protesting during the national anthem and his about-face apology that briefly put him in a Twitter fight with Donald Trump, Brees spoke to Benjamin Watson.
The two were twice teammates on the New Orleans Saints and stayed close. Watson, who retired after the 2019 season with New England, disagreed with the quarterback’s long-held opposition to protests during the anthem, but they were friends regardless.
Speaking on “Double Coverage,” the podcast hosted by Patriots’ Devin and Jason McCourty, Watson wasn’t surprised to hear Brees’ initial comments, but didn’t like the timing nor the delivery.
