Patriots add cornerback Derek Cox to fill foster spot

The Patriots have added cornerback Derek Cox to their 90-man roster. He essentially fills the spot created by the release of Brandon Spikes.

Cox is 28, and a veteran of five NFL seasons. He was a third-round pick with Jacksonville (2009-12), and then moved on to San Deigo (2013). The 6-foot-1, 195 defensive back was released by the Chargers last March. He spent time in Minnesota and Baltimore, but didn’t stick with either.

Cox essentially provides depth at cornerback, with Super Bowl hero Malcolm Butler still not practicing for unknown reasons.

In five seasons, Cox has played in 63 NFL games with 56 starts and has accumulated 204 total tackles, 13 interceptions, and 39 passes defensed.
