Their 2024 season was not even two hours in the rear-view mirror when the New England Patriots released a statement on behalf of owner Robert Kraft. Jerod Mayo, who was hand-picked to succeed Bill Belichick as the organization’s head coach, has been fired after only one season at the job.

Mayo, a former linebacker and assistant coach under Belichick, took over the team in 2024. While having learned under the future Hall of Famer and enjoying the support of ownership, he was unable to steer the team clear of disaster all year long.

The end result was a 4-13 campaign littered with disappointing moments, lack of team development, and bizarre media appearances from Mayo and his players alike.
