Rashaan Melvin's short stint with the New England Patriots is over, as is the even shorter stint of practice squad tight end Joseph Fauria.
Both players were waived Monday, leaving an open spot on the 53-man roster and an available spot on the practice squad.
Melvin, a long 6-foot-3 corner, played just 49 defensive snaps since he was claimed off waivers from Baltimore in early October. The Patriots have primarily opted to play three safeties instead of three cornerbacks in sub-defense sets; Patrick Chung and Devin McCourty have had man coverage assignments with Duron Harmon playing as the single-high safety.
