Already short on running backs, the New England Patriots released veteran Donald Brown Tuesday, according to ESPN's Field Yates.
Brown, 29, had been limited due to injury for most of training camp. He took reps with the first team offense during the first week, but had not practiced in full since the fourth day of camp.
With Dion Lewis set to begin the season on PUP, the Pats will be relying heavily on the duo of LeGarrette Blount and James White. Brandon Bolden projects as the top back behind both players. Tyler Gaffney, healthy for the first time in his three summers with the Pats, remains in the mix.
