New England Patriots legend won’t return to coaching staff (report)

Matthew Slater’s time with the Patriots appears to have come to an end.

The former New England special teamer and longtime captain’s role as special assistant won’t carry over into the 2025 season, ESPN’s Mike Reiss reported Sunday.

Slater, who spent his entire 16-year career with the Patriots, retired after the 2023 season and remained with the team as a special assistant to then-coach Jerod Mayo.

During a recent interview with SiriusXM NFL, Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye discussed how Slater was a great mentor to him.
