Tyler Gaffney's two-year run with the New England Patriots is over, as the team announced his release Monday.
Gaffney, a 220-pound back out of Stanford, spent the past two seasons on injured reserve. A former sixth-round pick by Carolina, Gaffney was expected to challenge for a spot on the 53-man roster a year ago, but suffered a season-ending knee injury early in training camp.
The Pats now have Dion Lewis (coming off a torn ACL), James White, Donald Brown, Brandon Bolden and Joey Iosefa at running back.
LeGarrette Blount remains a free agent. The 29-year-old running back was sending Snapchats from the Patriots locker room last week, an indication that he could be brought back for 2016.
