FOXBORO — As one would expect in a preseason opener, the Pats' defense was ahead of the offense, but overall it was a good enough showing to earn a 34-22 win over the Saints at Gillette Stadium.
Jimmy Garoppolo completed 11-of-18 passes for 168 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. He looked considerably better in the second quarter, completing 8-of-11 passes despite some consistent pressure from the Saints' front seven.
Linebacker Jamie Collins (interception return) and defensive end Trey Flowers (sack and fumble return) each scored defensive touchdowns.
Receiver Malcolm Mitchell made four receptions for 55 yards but left the game and did not return after a gruesome-looking left elbow injury at the end of the second quarter.
