Lions, Patriots join list of NFL teams sitting out voluntary workouts due to COVID-19

The Detroit Lions and New England Patriots became the latest teams to opt out of formal voluntary workouts this offseason because of COVID-19 concerns.

The NFL Players Association released statements on behalf of Lions and Patriots players Wednesday saying the decision "is in everyone's best interest" given rising COVID numbers in the state.

Currently, Michigan has the highest COVID-19 case rate in the nation at 510.5 per 100,000 people, and hospitalizations are the highest they've been during the pandemic. Gov Gretchen Whitmer recently called on all Michiganders to stop dining indoors for two weeks and for youth sports and in-person high school classes to pause for the same amount of time.
