Down the stretch last season, it appeared Mack Wilson’s tenure with the New England Patriots might be coming to an end after only one year. The offseason trade acquisition had seen semi-regular opportunities in the early parts of his 2022 campaign, but found himself on the outs following a Week 13 loss to Buffalo.
Over the final five games of the season, Wilson did not see the field once as an off-the-ball linebacker. He did continue to play a prominent role in the kicking game, but his benching on the defensive side of the ball appeared to be a sign of things to come.
