Key leader on Patriots defense gets contract extension

Minutes after the news broke, coach Jerod Mayo confirmed the report that Jabril Peppers and the New England Patriots had agreed to a contract extension.

“I can confirm it. I’m the head coach I can confirm it,” said Mayo, seemingly joking that he no longer had to worry about Bill Belichick’s ire if he revealed information. “I’m very happy for Peppers, for his family and for our team and our organization. He really embodies everything we want on the field.”

Peppers, who will turn 29 in October, signed a three-year deal according to ESPN’s Field Yates who tweeted:

“The Patriots and S Jabrill Peppers are finalizing a 3-year extension with a base value of $24M and worth up to $30M, per source.
