Even under new leadership, some of the New England Patriots’ traditions have not changed. One example is the Practice Player of the Week designation: as new head coach Jerod Mayo announced on Wednesday, the team will again hand out the honors after each victory.
Following the Patriots’ 16-10 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 1, eight such players were recognized for their work leading up to that particular game. As was the case under Mayo’s predecessor, Bill Belichick, those players were spotted donning black jerseys at practice on Wednesday.
The players in question were announced as the following:

- TE Mitchell Wilcox
- DT Eric Johnson
- LB Ochaun Mathis
- LB Joe Giles-Harris
