Jerod Mayo explains why Drake Maye only played one series vs. Panthers

Drake Maye’s first drive in the NFL ranks was solid, albeit unspectacular, on Thursday night.

Even though New England’s drive ultimately stalled out on its own 45-yard line, Maye made the most of his chances under center. He completed two of his three passes for 19 yards, including a 13-yard pickup from Antonio Gibson.

After an up-and-down showing for New England’s promising young QB during training camp, that initial drive against the Panthers stood as a promising step in the right direction for the future of the franchise.

The only problem, however, was that Maye had zero opportunities to build off of that start in New England’s preseason opener.
