FOXBORO — There is no flash to Jonathan Freeny’s game. He has carved out his niche in this league with a workmanlike approach.
For a player who was undrafted out of Rutgers and has spent much of his career playing on special teams, Freeny knows there’s other ways to contribute than his listed position of linebacker.
Still, in last Thursday’s preseason game against the Green Bay Packers, the fourth-year player found himself not only getting plenty of minutes on defense, but wearing the green dot of communication, as Jerod Mayo and Dont’a Hightower did not play.
Although Freeny is still primarily involved on special teams when Mayo and Hightower are on the field, he relished the chance to make his mark on defense.
