In years past, the annual end-of-season meeting between Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots’ ownership felt more like a formality than anything else. With the team falling to a 4-12 record and finishing in last place in the AFC East for the first time in 23 seasons, however, considerable uncertainty surrounds the get-together.
That meeting, as first reported by Mike Reiss of ESPN, is set for Monday. Belichick, as the head of the organization’s football operations, will participate alongside Patriots chairman Robert Kraft and team president Jonathan Kraft.
What will come from that review process remains to be seen, but it appears two basic options are on the table: either the team will retain Belichick as its head coach (while possibly making changes on the personnel side), or the two parties will agree to a mutual parting of the ways.
