The New England Patriots might not have Jerod Mayo next season. Mayo posted an Instgram titled "Retiring A Patriot," in which he thanks the Patriots organization.
The post is embeded below.
Mayo is just 29 years old, but has battled injuries throughout his time in the NFL. He's spent his entire career with the Patriots, who took him No. 10 overall in the 2008 NFL Draft.
Mayo was the rookie of the year in 2008 and an All-Pro in 2010. But injuries caught up to him after a Pro Bowl 2012 season. He played in six games in both 2013 and 2014. He played in every game this year, but lost his starting job and started only eight games, matching a career low with 35 tackles.
Had Mayo not retired, he might have been a cap cut. He had a $11.4 million cap hit, and cutting him would have saved the team $7 million. But by retiring, the Patriots no longer need to do that.
