On this episode of the Patriots Report, host Harris Rubenstein breaks down the top New England Patriots' free agency and NFL Draft team needs for 2018 offseason.
We start with the linebacker position as it was easily the weakest unit on the Patriots whole roster this past season. Top LB Don't'a Hightower missed most of the season with a knee injury and his replacement, David Harris, was inactive for many games. LB Elandon Roberts was expected to take a step forward in his second year in the league but instead did the opposite. Kyle Van Noy missed multiple games as well, however, he was available for the playoffs. The Patriots should draft a new LB in the first or second rounds of the 2018 NFL Draft.
Next on the team needs list is defensive end. Injuries ravaged what was supposed to be one of the Patriots top units. They lost rookie DE Derek Rivers to a knee injury to start the year as well as Vincent Valentine, who missed the whole season with a knee injury of his own. Alan Branch was a healthy scratch multiple times due to his conditioning. The situation became so dire that the Patriots were forced to sign James Harrison after the Steelers released the 40-year old DE mid-season. Look for the Patriots to make a move for a DE during Day 2 or Day 3.
