Patterson has been used mostly as a return man in his career, but Oakland used him more as a wide receiver and as a running back in his only season with the Raiders.

New England has been looking to add more weapons after losing running back Dion Lewis to the Tennessee Titans and wide receiver Danny Amendola to the Miami Dolphins in free agency.
Patterson, a big-play threat due to this speed, caught 31 passes for 309 yards while rushing a career-high 13 times for 121 yards and two touchdowns last season.
