Cleveland was planning to release McCourty, but New England swooped in to add him. The Patriots had a need at corner after letting Malcolm Butler leave in free agency.
The Browns have been working to overhaul their secondary this offseason, trading for safety Damarious Randall and signing free-agent cornerbacks T.J. Carrie and Terrance Mitchell.
McCourty racked up 65 tackles and three interceptions last season. He now joins his twin brother, Devin, who has spent his entire eight-year career with the Patriots.
