Hakeem Nicks could be headed to the New England Patriots.
Nicks and fellow wide receiver Victor Cruz have been two of the few bright spots in an utterly abysmal season for the New York Giants, but the latest chatter out of the Giants front office makes it sound like both could be on the trading block as the Giants prepare to cut their assets and enter rebuilding mode.
The Giants are 0-5, and QB Eli Manning has looked like a shadow of his former self, throwing 12 interceptions so far on the year. The latest rumors out of Foxborough make it sound like the Patriots are VERY much prepared to offer Nicks an escape route, and Tom Brady is anxious to add depth to a depleted receiving corps.
Brady waxed poetic on Boston's WEEI radio about how envious he was of Denver's receiving options, and while he hasn't publicly lobbied for another receiver, it's obvious he'd love another target who can make more plays than Aaron Dobson or Kenbrell Thompkins.
Recent signing Austin Collie reportedly hasn't looked ready to provide much of an upgrade either, and the Patriots are actively exploring options elsewhere. Nicks racked up 142 receiving yards last week in a loss, and he's clearly a better option than any of the wideouts the Patriots currently have available.
Even the return of Danny Amendola and Rob Gronkowski won't suddenly give the Patriots the same dangerous passing game they've had in past seasons - the Pats are in dire need of experience and depth, and Nicks gives them an experienced, reliable downfield threat. While we don't expect Nicks to move to New England before next Sunday's game against New Orleans, there is DEFINITE interest in this move on New England's end.
