* WHEN DOUG KNUTH WAS HIRED as Nevada’s athletic director in April 2013, he inherited a mess. There’s no other way to put it. The department was $3.2 million in the red. The facilities had basically gone a decade without an improvements. The fan base was fractured. Many of the program’s coaches, who had struggled to post winning records, had just gotten long contract extensions.
