James Butler galloped 33 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the quarter, battling through a number of would-be tacklers to give Nevada a 17-0 lead. UNLV responded with its first score, converting a third-and-9 for its first first down before a 34-yard pass put the Rebels into Nevada territory. UNLV QB Kurt Palandech then broke five tackles on a 27-yard touchdown run to make it 17-7. Nevada went on another extended drive, covering 56 yards over 10 carries, before a Pettit 32-yard field goal made it 20-7.
