The battle of first-place teams turned out to be as compelling as advertised.
In the end, though, it was San Diego State that remained on top of the Mountain West’s West Division, trading blows all night with Nevada before emerging with a 23-21 win on Saturday in Carson, Calif.
It came down to the final drive, with the Aztecs’ Matt Araiza hitting a short field goal with under 90 seconds to play.
With the win, SDSU moved to 5-1 in Mountain West games and took a one-game lead over both Nevada (4-2 in MW games) and Fresno State (5-2) with two games to play.
