The last time Tyron Criswell spoke to his father, they were separated by a couple of states.
Tyron was playing in an AAU basketball tournament in Indiana. His father, Tegory, was back home in Omaha, Neb., where Tyron was more or less born and raised (more on that later).
The younger Criswell briefly spoke to his father over the phone that April 2011 day. Tegory went to almost all of his son’s games, but couldn’t make this trip because of work. Still, dad checked in before the game just to see how his son was doing and told Tyron to give him a call when the game ended.
