ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico attack came one wave after another, each bigger than the last, until it finally swallowed Nevada up, and while the Wolf Pack fought back, it couldn’t get back to shore.
In the Mountain West opener for both teams Wednesday night, New Mexico went on a 25-2 run over a stretch of more than 10 minutes early on before taking an 88-76 win over Nevada in front of 13,247 fans at WisePies Arena. The Wolf Pack’s early mistakes sank the team in the place formerly known as The Pit.
The loss was the second in a row for Nevada following a 98-69 defeat at Wichita State and marks the first time this year the Pack has lost back-to-back games, both times playing before 10,000-plus fans.
