Nevada finally got its Mountain West opener to begin the new year. The Wolf Pack took full advantage, getting past New Mexico, 79-70, in a scrappy, physical game at Lawlor Events Center.
After playing just three times in December, Nevada looked occasionally sloppy at the offensive end, particularly in the first half. The Wolf Pack was able to turn to its defense, though, holding the Lobos to 35.9 percent shooting while overcoming a one-point halftime deficit and eventually leading by as many as 19 points.
Grant Sherfield, Nevada’s leading scorer, was held to 10 points on 2-for-8 shooting.
