On the third play of the first game of his junior season of high school, Nephi Sewell broke his neck.
Playing cornerback, Sewell collided with an opposing receiver on an incomplete pass. Sewell went down and tried to get up. He couldn't summon the strength to do so. His neck started to stiffen up. He couldn’t feel his body.
After five minutes on the ground, Sewell rose and walked off the field. He was told he had probably just suffered a concussion but wanted to get back into the game.
