It was a sun-splashed October afternoon in Reno, the sun hanging high in the sky, a cloud scarcely to be seen, a modest chunk of the city’s 65,000 citizens headed to the university to see its newest attraction.
The New Mackay Stadium, as it would be called on this day, was hosting a football game for the first time. The old stadium, which sat about 500 yards south and opened in the early 1900s, was closed down earlier that year to make room for a row of new academic buildings.
