David Cunningham received a text from his mother in September that radically changed his freshman year at Nevada.
It wasn’t some dramatic text. Nobody was hurt or sick. It was a text about opportunity.
She had seen online that the Nevada basketball team was having an open tryout for students on campus.
Cunningham had been an all-league player at Bella Vista High School near Sacramento but decided to give up basketball to focus on academics. Until he got a text from his mom with a screenshot of the tryout.
“She sent it to me and said, ‘Give it a try,’” Cunningham said.
