My first tailgate of the year didn't come on a fall football Saturday.
In fact, it wasn't for a football game at all.
It was a Wednesday in August, and — like thousands of others — I was drawn to Memorial Stadium for a record-breaking spectacle: Volleyball Day in Nebraska.
Ticketless, I was in it for the festivity of the event mostly — and hoping to get a meal out of the affair, too.
So, on my dinner break, I began the trek from the Journal Star's office in the Telegraph District to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus, intent, mainly, on finding some tailgaters.
