All radishes lovers need to head to Oaxaca on December 23rd to experience a one-of-a-kind festival called The Night of the Radishes (Noche de Rabanos), which consists of local artists competing to make the best radish sculpture to win a grand prize. According to Atlas Obscura, this tradition started when holiday market vendors tried to make their vegetables more enticing by making sculptures with them. It was such a hit that the governor, Francisco Vasconcelos, decided to create an official contest and it’s been a Oaxacan tradition since 1897.
Unfortunately, I didn’t attend this interesting festival this year.
