Steven M. Sipple: Martinez's obvious prowess turns up urgency in Frost's building process

Nebraska quarterbacks coach Mario Verduzco has a way of taking you from surface-level "sports talk" into deeper realms.

In a recent discussion, he touched on cognitive psychology — particularly the importance of categorization in helping quarterbacks learn an offense.

"There's an interesting comment in one of the cognitive psychology books I have," Verduzco says. "To put it in a nutshell: If we observed and then had to memorize everything we saw, we'd soon be overloaded in our brains by the particulars. Our ability to categorize things and put things in chunks has allowed us to flourish.

"Well, that goes along with how you key and read defenses.
