Nebraska's Kate Smith was named the Big Ten Women's Golfer of the Week on Wednesday, March 17, after capturing the first collegiate championship of her career at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate in New Orleans.
Smith, a fifth-year senior from Detroit Lakes, Minn., fired a season-best three-round total of 215, including a two-under-par 70 in Tuesday's final round at the English Turn Golf and Country Club. Smith, who earned four previous runner-up finishes as a collegian among her 28 career top-25 showings, claimed her first career title with a one-stroke win over Carlota Palacios from Tulane.
