Redshirt freshman linebacker Greg Simmons is no longer with the Nebraska football program, a school spokesman confirmed Wednesday.
The 6-foot-2, 240-pound linebacker was expected to compete for playing time in the Huskers' new 3-4 defensive scheme. Simmons was working at the strong side inside 'backer spot during spring ball, behind Dedrick Young and Mohamed Barry.
Once committed to Miami, Simmons flipped to Nebraska and was part of Mike Riley's second recruiting class. The Fort Pierce, Florida, native was ranked the No. 14 inside linebacker prospect in the country by ESPN, and the No. 81 overall prospect in Florida.
