Mike Riley’s tenure leading the Nebraska football program will go no further than three seasons.
Riley was fired in a 9 a.m. meeting Saturday morning with athletic director Bill Moos, a move that has been expected for weeks as Riley's third Husker team failed to meet expectations and, in the eyes of Moos, did not take the requisite steps toward championship-level football over the course of a 4-8 season.
"I had five weeks to observe and assess" the football program, Moos said in an afternoon news conference. "We went 1-4, and had three blowout losses, and I didn't feel the program was progressing like I hoped it would.
