Red Report: Chinander holds off on awarding coveted Blackshirts

The last time Nebraska played a football game, Iowa scored 56 points inside Memorial Stadium.

That’s one of two reasons why the coveted Blackshirt jerseys will stay on hold for now.

Nebraska defensive coordinator Erik Chinander said no Blackshirts will be awarded before Saturday’s 7 p.m. season opener against Akron.

“There’s two contributing factors right now,” Chinander said following Tuesday’s practice. "No. 1, the 'ORs' and the 'ANDs' (separating defenders on the depth chart). Some of those battles haven’t been won yet; they’re still being fought.

“The other thing, the last time we (Nebraska) took the field … it was not a great performance for the Blackshirts, so we don’t think anybody deserves them yet until we see what they can do in Memorial Stadium.
