Rapid reaction: Verduzco says QB competition remains close; and Barnett retires from football

If you're looking for finality on Nebraska's quarterback front, sorry, you'll probably have to wait until perhaps Friday.

Wednesday, Husker quarterbacks coach Mario Verduzco said the competition between Adrian Martinez and Tristan Gebbia remains close.

Verduzco said the coaches have not discussed using a two-quarterback system, although head coach Scott Frost said Friday that both deserve to play.

A situational scrimmage Thursday could be an important factor in the decision, offensive coordinator Troy Walters said. He said having two QBs in such a close race is "a good problem to have."

In other news, junior offensive lineman Jalin Barnett has decided to step away from the game, offensive line coach Greg Austin said.
