Patrick O’Brien was not at Nebraska spring football practice on Thursday and he is not expected to return to the program.
Quarterbacks coach Mario Verduzco confirmed after practice that O’Brien, the redshirt sophomore, did not receive as many repititions as other quarterbacks competing for the Huskers’ starting job on Tuesday.
Verduzco said he had a Wednesday conversation with O’Brien and, while the veteran assistant coach did not expand on the details of that conversation, and a team official confirmed to the Journal Star that O’Brien has officially asked for his release and that it will be accepted, setting up a transfer for the San Juan Capistrano, California, native.
